Ludza Castle Ruins (Latvia)

Weather…

The Ludza Castle Ruins (Ludzas pilsdrupas) mark the site of a former Livonian Order fortress, built in 1399 as a defensive outpost on the eastern border. The castle was an imposing three-story brick building featuring six towers and three forecourts, strategically positioned on an isthmus between the Great and Small Ludza Lakes. Throughout the centuries, it was the site of numerous conflicts, particularly during the Livonian Wars, until it was largely destroyed in 1654 by the troops of Russian Tsar Alexei Mikhailovich. Today, the remaining massive walls testify to the former military might of the Order and the significance of Ludza as one of Latvia's oldest towns. The ruins offer sweeping views over the historical old town and the surrounding lake district, making them a landmark of the Latgale region. Every year, medieval festivals and cultural events are held on the grounds, bringing history back to life. Conservation work ensures the remains are preserved for future generations.
