Kristapils Castle Ruins (Latvia)

Weather…

Krustpils Castle (historically also referred to as Kristapils) has a history spanning over 800 years and is one of the best-preserved medieval fortifications in Latvia. It was founded in 1237 by the Archbishop of Riga, Nikolaus von Nauwen, as a strategic stronghold on the right bank of the Daugava River. Throughout the centuries, the castle was a focal point for conflicts between the Livonian Order, Polish-Lithuanian forces, and Swedish armies. In the 17th century, the Swedes captured the site, and it later became the property of the von Korff family, who transformed it into a Baroque-style manor house. Despite sustaining significant damage during both World Wars, the main structure survived and has undergone extensive restoration in recent decades. Today, it houses the Jēkabpils History Museum, showcasing the region's military heritage and aristocratic lifestyle. Notable features include its deep vaulted cellars and the prominent gate tower, which provides expansive views over the Daugava valley. The castle continues to be a vital landmark for cultural identity and historical research in the Selonia and Latgale border regions.
