Aizkraukle Hydropower Center (Latvia)

Weather…

The Pļaviņas Hydropower Plant in Aizkraukle is the largest power station of its kind in the Baltics and a critical component of Latvia's energy infrastructure. Constructed between 1961 and 1966 on the Daugava River, it has permanently transformed the landscape and the region's economy. With an installed capacity of over 900 megawatts, it covers a significant portion of the national electricity demand during peak times. Its construction led to the creation of the modern town of Aizkraukle, originally designed as a residential area for construction workers and technicians. In addition to power generation, the reservoir serves water level regulation and provides opportunities for inland shipping and tourism. In recent years, extensive renovations have been carried out on the turbines and the dam to increase the facility's lifespan and efficiency. The power plant is a symbol of Latvia's 20th-century industrial development and remains indispensable for the country's energy independence.
