Mount Phousi
Mount Phousi is the sacred hill situated in the heart of Luang Prabang's old town, rising approximately 100 meters above the surrounding plain. It serves as both a geographical landmark and a spiritual center, offering 360-degree views of the Mekong and Nam Khan rivers and the verdant mountains of northern Laos. At the summit sits Wat Chom Si, a gilded stupa built in 1804 during the reign of King Anurat, which remains one of the most iconic silhouettes in the city's skyline. To reach the top, visitors must ascend 328 steps via a staircase lined with Naga balustrades. Along the paths, there are various shrines and Buddha images, including representations for each day of the week and a footprint of the Buddha located in a small grotto. The hill is particularly popular at sunset, when the changing light illuminates the temples and colonial architecture below. Beyond its tourism appeal, Phousi remains an active site of worship where locals offer flowers and incense to ensure good fortune.
