Royal Palace Museum (Laos)

Weather…

Haw Kham, now known as the National Museum, was the former Royal Palace of Luang Prabang. Built in 1904 during the French colonial era for King Sisavang Vong, its architecture blends French Beaux-Arts style with traditional Lao decorative elements. The palace is situated on a prime site along the banks of the Mekong River, surrounded by spacious gardens. Following the end of the monarchy in 1975, the palace was converted into a museum to preserve the history of the Lao kingdom. Visitors can explore the royal apartments, the throne room, and an impressive collection of diplomatic gifts from around the world. The most sacred object housed here is the Phra Bang, an 83-cm-tall Buddha statue made of a gold and silver alloy, after which the city is named. The throne room walls are adorned with bustling red glass mosaics depicting scenes from Lao life and historical epics. The museum provides a comprehensive look at the lifestyle of the royal family and the political changes of the 20th century.
