Qaruh Island (Kuwait)

Weather…

Qaruh Island is the smallest and most seaward of Kuwait's islands, measuring only about 275 meters in length and 175 meters in width. It holds a profound place in national history as the first piece of Kuwaiti soil to be liberated from Iraqi occupation on January 21, 1991, during the Gulf War. Today, the island is an uninhabited sanctuary, valued for its pristine natural environment and diverse marine life. It is a critical nesting ground for endangered sea turtles, particularly the Green turtle and the Hawksbill turtle. The coral reefs surrounding the island are considered some of the best-preserved in the Persian Gulf, making it a premier destination for scuba diving and snorkeling enthusiasts. The crystal-clear waters harbor a multitude of fish species and bustling coral formations. Due to its ecological sensitivity, visitors are encouraged to practice responsible tourism to ensure the protection of the delicate nesting sites and the surrounding reef ecosystem.

📋 Practical info

🧭
Getting there
As Kuwait's most distant island, access is exclusively via a long boat ride, usually setting off from the southern coastal marinas. The journey can take several hours depending on the craft, requiring favorable weather for a safe and reasonably comfortable crossing.
📅
Best season
Spring and autumn provide the safest and most enjoyable sea states for reaching this distant location and enjoying its clear waters. Summer heat can be incredibly punishing, while winter winds frequently churn the open gulf, making the long journey inadvisable.
⛰️
Terrain & paths
The island itself is a tiny, flat expanse of pure white sand, surrounded by spectacularly clear blue waters and animated coral reefs. It is small enough to walk across in mere minutes, presenting a pristine, undisturbed coastal environment.
🎒
What to bring
Preparation is paramount: bring a significant surplus of drinking water, dense shade options, reef-safe sunscreen, and snacks for the entire day. High-quality snorkeling or diving equipment is strongly recommended to fully appreciate the outstanding marine ecosystem below.
🅿️
Parking
Mainland marina parking must be utilized before you depart; there is obviously no infrastructure on this tiny offshore dot. Double-check your vehicle is secured in a permitted spot to avoid issues upon your return hours later.
⚠️
Safety
Extreme isolation is the primary safety factor; you are far from any immediate assistance or supplies if an emergency arises. The currents around the island can be deceptively strong, so inexperienced swimmers should stay very close to the anchored boat.
⏱️
Time needed
Given the substantial travel time required just to get there and back, dedicating a full day to this expedition is absolutely necessary. Visitors typically spend about three to four hours anchored near the island enjoying the pristine water.
