Qaruh Island is the smallest and most seaward of Kuwait's islands, measuring only about 275 meters in length and 175 meters in width. It holds a profound place in national history as the first piece of Kuwaiti soil to be liberated from Iraqi occupation on January 21, 1991, during the Gulf War. Today, the island is an uninhabited sanctuary, valued for its pristine natural environment and diverse marine life. It is a critical nesting ground for endangered sea turtles, particularly the Green turtle and the Hawksbill turtle. The coral reefs surrounding the island are considered some of the best-preserved in the Persian Gulf, making it a premier destination for scuba diving and snorkeling enthusiasts. The crystal-clear waters harbor a multitude of fish species and bustling coral formations.
