Al-Zour Village Ruins (Kuwait)

Weather…

The ruins of Al-Zour village on Failaka Island are a poignant and eerie reminder of the human cost of the 1991 Gulf War. Before the Iraqi invasion, Al-Zour was a thriving village, sustained by fishing and agriculture. In August 1990, the island's approximately 2,000 residents were forcibly expelled by Iraqi forces. The island was turned into a heavily fortified military base. During the liberation, the village suffered severe damage, both from the Iraqi occupation and coalition bombing. After the war, the island was cleared of mines, but the former residents never returned to rebuild. Today, the decaying houses, school, and mosque stand as a ghost town, frozen in time. The ruins serve as an unofficial memorial to the destruction of communities by war and the permanent loss of home and heritage.
