Lake Victoria (Kenya)

Weather…

Lake Victoria, with a surface area of approximately 68,800 square kilometres, is Africa's largest lake and the world's second-largest freshwater lake by surface area. It is shared between Kenya, Tanzania, and Uganda, with Kenya controlling about 6% of its waters. The lake serves as the primary source of the White Nile and plays a fundamental role in the climate and economy of East Africa. It was named in 1858 by British explorer John Hanning Speke in honour of Queen Victoria. Geologically, the lake is relatively young; its basin formed roughly 400,000 years ago due to tectonic shifts. The lake's biodiversity was historically immense, particularly known for hundreds of endemic cichlid species, but it was drastically altered by the introduction of the Nile perch in the 1950s. Today, the lake faces significant ecological challenges, including overfishing, industrial pollution, and the spread of invasive water hyacinth. Despite these threats, Lake Victoria remains a lifeline for millions who depend on its fisheries and the fertile lands surrounding its shores.
