Babadzha Khatun Mausoleum (Kazakhstan)

Weather…

The Babadzha Khatun Mausoleum is an 11th or 12th-century architectural monument located near Taraz in southern Kazakhstan. It is characterized by its extraordinary construction, most notably its unique 16-ribbed conical roof, which is a rare feature in the medieval architecture of Central Asia. The square-based building is constructed from fired bricks and decorated with sophisticated brickwork patterns on its exterior walls. Historically, Babadzha Khatun is believed to have been the nurse or faithful companion of Aisha Bibi, whose more famous mausoleum stands just a few meters away. According to local legend, after the tragic death of Aisha Bibi, Babadzha Khatun oversaw the construction of her mistress's tomb and remained on the site as its guardian until her own death. The mausoleum serves as a prime example of early medieval regional architecture and is currently on the UNESCO World Heritage tentative list.
