Taraz, one of the oldest cities in Kazakhstan, is located in the fertile Talas River valley in the southern part of the country and has a history spanning over 2,000 years. The city was a pivotal hub on the Silk Road and was cited in ancient Greek and Chinese records as a prominent trade center. In 751 AD, the famous Battle of Talas took place nearby, where the Abbasid Caliphate defeated the Chinese Tang Dynasty, an event that initiated the Islamization of Central Asia and facilitated the spread of papermaking technology westward. During the Middle Ages, Taraz flourished under the Karakhanids, leaving behind impressive architectural legacies such as the Aulie-Ata mausoleums. In the late 19th century under Russian rule, the city was renamed Aulie-Ata and later Dzhambul in honor of the poet Jambyl Jabayev, before reclaiming its historical name in 1997. Today, Taraz is a modern regional center that takes great pride in its archaeological heritage while playing a key role in the chemical industry and food processing.
