Otrar Ruins (Kazakhstan)

Weather…

The ruins of Otrar, once an important oasis city on the Silk Road, are one of the most significant archaeological sites in Kazakhstan. The city, whose history dates back to the first century, was a thriving center for trade, culture, and science. It was the birthplace of the famous philosopher Al-Farabi. Its tragic fate came in 1219 when it was destroyed by the Mongol hordes of Genghis Khan after a six-month siege. This act of destruction was in retaliation for the murder of Mongol envoys by the governor of Otrar. Today, visitors can explore the remains of the once-mighty citadel, city walls, mosques, and bathhouses. The excavations have provided a fascinating picture of urban life on the Silk Road. The ruins of Otrar are a poignant testament to the transience of power and the rise and fall of great civilizations.
