Mausoleum of Khoja Ahmed Yasawi (Kazakhstan)

Weather…

The Mausoleum of Khoja Ahmed Yasawi in the city of Turkistan is an outstanding example of Timurid architecture and a major pilgrimage site in Central Asia. Its construction was commissioned in 1389 by Timur (Tamerlane) to honor the tomb of the famous 12th-century Sufi mystic, but it remained unfinished after Timur's death in 1405. Despite its incompleteness, the structure is sweeping. Its huge, turquoise dome is the largest of its kind in Central Asia. The building has 35 rooms, including a mosque, a library, and burial chambers. The facade is adorned with ornate tiles and inscriptions that are still impressive today. In 2003, the mausoleum was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site, underscoring its immense historical and cultural significance. It is a spiritual center and a monument to one of the most influential scholars in the Islamic world.
