Issyk Kurgan (Kazakhstan)

Weather…

The Issyk Kurgan is an ancient burial mound near the town of Esik, world-renowned for the discovery of the 'Golden Man' in 1969. The tomb dates back to the 4th or 3rd century BC and belonged to a young Saka warrior whose magnificent armor consisted of over 4,000 gold pieces. This find is of invaluable importance for understanding the Scythian-Saka culture and their highly advanced metalworking skills. In addition to the golden attire, weapons, ceramics, and a silver bowl with an undeciphered inscription were discovered. The 'Golden Man' is now a national symbol of Kazakhstan, featured on the Independence Monument in Almaty, among other places. The archaeological site includes numerous other burial mounds that provide insights into the social hierarchy of nomadic tribes. A modern onsite museum presents replicas of the finds and explains the historical context of this significant discovery.
