Burqu Nature Reserve is located in the remote black basalt desert of northeastern Jordan and was established in 2018. The centerpiece of the reserve is the historical Qasr Burqu, originally a Roman military outpost that was later expanded and used by the Byzantines and Umayyads. A nearby dam catches ephemeral rainwater, creating a vital oasis in the otherwise harsh 'Badia' region. This water source is crucial for local wildlife and migratory birds navigating the desert expanse. The reserve spans approximately 950 square kilometers, protecting species such as the Arabian sand fox and various desert reptiles. Geologically, the landscape is defined by ancient volcanic activity, resulting in vast plains covered with dark basalt stones. Burqu features a unique blend of archaeological heritage and pristine desert wilderness, far removed from the country's main tourist routes.
