Deep in the heart of Shikoku lies the Iya Valley, one of Japan's three 'hidden regions.' It is famous for its dramatic scenery of steep, forested mountains and the emerald-green Iya River. The valley's most iconic attractions are the Kazurabashi, or vine bridges, which were originally built by fleeing Heike samurai as a means to quickly cut off their pursuers. Walking across these swaying structures, made of woven mountain vines and wooden planks, provides a thrilling experience with views of the rushing water below. Adventure seekers head to the Oboke and Koboke Gorges for some of Japan's best white-water rafting and scenic boat tours. The valley is also home to remote hot spring resorts, such as the famous Iya Onsen, where a cable car takes guests down a 170-meter cliff to the baths beside the river. For a glimpse into traditional rural life, the village of Ochiai features a cluster of historic farmhouses built on nearly vertical slopes, now recognized as a national heritage site. The local cuisine features hearty Iya Soba (buckwheat noodles) and grilled river fish. Autumn is undoubtedly the best time to visit, as the mountain foliage turns into a striking tapestry of red and orange. Due to its remote nature and narrow winding roads, exploring the valley is best done by rental car, offering a journey back in time to a mystical and rugged side of Japan.
