The Kurashiki Bikan Historical Quarter in Okayama Prefecture is a preserved merchant district dating back to the Edo period (1603-1867). During the 17th century, the area thrived as a regional hub for rice distribution under the direct control of the Shogunate, leading to the construction of distinct white-walled storehouses known as kura. The central Kurashiki River, lined with weeping willow trees, served as a vital canal for transporting goods by boat to the nearby port. In 1930, the Ohara Museum of Art was established here, marking the first private museum of Western art in Japan, housing masterpieces by artists such as Monet and Picasso. The district was designated as an Important Preservation District for Groups of Traditional Buildings in 1979. Today, the area is also recognized for its association with the domestic denim industry, centered in the nearby Kojima district.
