Kinosaki Onsen is the quintessential Japanese hot spring town, located in Hyogo Prefecture. With a history stretching back over 1,300 years, the town is built around seven public bathhouses (soto-yu). The local tradition encourages guests to wear yukata and wooden geta sandals while strolling along the willow-lined canal to visit each bath, creating a timeless and pleasant atmosphere. The town’s architecture has remained remarkably traditional, with wooden buildings and stone bridges crossing the central waterway. In winter, Kinosaki becomes a culinary destination for its famous Matsuba crab, a prized local delicacy. For a panoramic view, the Kinosaki Onsen Ropeway takes visitors to the summit of Mount Daishi, overlooking the town and the Sea of Japan. Reached in about 2.5 hours by JR express train from Kyoto or Osaka, Kinosaki is a popular getaway. It is especially beautiful during the winter snow or the spring cherry blossom season. It features a first-rate opportunity to slow down and immerse oneself in the restorative culture of Japanese mineral baths.
