Takeda Castle Ruins (Castle in the Sky)
The Takeda Castle ruins in Hyogo Prefecture are situated atop the 353-meter high Mount Koshijo and are widely known as the Castle in the Sky. This title refers to the dense morning fog that fills the valley during autumn and winter, making the ruins appear as if they are floating on a sea of clouds. The fortress was constructed in 1441 by Yamana Sozen and functioned as a strategic military outpost during the Sengoku period before being abandoned in 1600 following the Battle of Sekigahara. Today, only the massive stone foundations (ishigaki) remain, yet they are considered among the best-preserved examples of Japanese castle masonry. The site spans approximately 400 meters in length and 100 meters in width. Visitors hike up steep trails to reach the summit, with the neighboring Ritsuunkyo mountain providing the best vantage point to witness the cloud sea phenomenon.
