Toyako is one of Hokkaido's premier travel destinations, centered around the circular Lake Toya in a volcanic caldera. The town is renowned for its hot spring (onsen) baths and the presence of Mt. Usu, an active volcano. Nearby, Usu Beach (有珠海水浴場) provides a popular seaside swimming spot in summer, while the lakeside Koibito Coast (恋人海岸), or 'Lovers' Coast,' is famous for its romantic atmosphere and remarkable sunset views. Part of the Shikotsu-Toya National Park, the area has various outdoor activities, including crater rim trekking and boat cruises to the central Nakajima Islands. From April to October, a spectacular firework display lights up the sky over the lake every evening, best viewed from the waterfront hotels. The Usuzan Ropeway takes visitors to an observation deck with panoramic views of the caldera and the nearby smoking lava dome of Showa Shinzan. The culinary scene features fresh Hokkaido produce, such as premium dairy, local potatoes, and seafood from the nearby Uchiura Bay. Toyako also gained international fame as the host of the 2008 G8 Summit, highlighting its status as a world-class resort destination.
