Tomamae is a distinctive coastal town in Hokkaido, best known for its pioneering role in wind energy; numerous wind turbines dot the hills along the coastline. A highlight for summer visitors is Tomamae Yugaoka White Beach (とままえ夕陽ヶ丘ホワイトビーチ), a beautiful man-made beach with fine white sand that provides a magnificent contrast to the blue Sea of Japan. In addition to modern energy production, the town is historically linked to the famous Sankebetsu brown bear incident, remembered by a memorial site further inland. Tomamae's gastronomy is famous for its scallops (Hotate), regarded as exceptionally sweet and meaty. Along the coastal road, there are cozy onsen resorts that offer relaxation with sunset views. The town is easily accessible via the Ororon Line and provides a well-suited blend of industrial innovation, tragic history, and natural seaside beauty.
