Goryōkaku Fort (Japan)

Weather…

Goryōkaku Fort in Hakodate, Hokkaido, is an impressive star-shaped fortress built in the 19th century based on the European Vauban architectural style. Construction took place from 1857 to 1866 under the direction of architect Takeda Ayasaburo by order of the Tokugawa Shogunate. Originally designed to protect Hakodate from foreign invasions, the fort became the site of the final resistance during the Boshin War. In 1868, shogunate loyalists proclaimed the short-lived Republic of Ezo there until their surrender following the Battle of Hakodate in 1869. Its distinctive pentagonal structure allowed for efficient defense with cannon fire in all directions, eliminating blind spots. Today, the site is designated as a Special Historic Site and serves as a popular public park, drawing thousands of visitors especially during the cherry blossom (sakura) season. At the center of the fortress, the former Hakodate Magistrate's Office was faithfully reconstructed and now serves as a museum. The nearby Goryōkaku Tower gives a spectacular bird's-eye view of the geometric perfection of the moats and stone walls. The fort remains a powerful symbol of Japan's transition from feudalism to modernity during the Meiji Restoration.
