Getting there
The main access to Japan's largest national park is typically via the cities of Asahikawa or Kamikawa, from where buses run to the ropeway stations at Asahidake and Sounkyo.
Best season
The best time for hiking is the short summer from July to August, and early autumn in September when the autumn foliage (koyo) glows spectacularly across the alpine landscape.
Terrain & paths
The pristine wilderness has a rugged mountainous landscape with challenging, partly volcanic trails that require surefootedness and prior experience in navigating alpine terrain.
What to bring
Due to rapid weather changes at altitude, sturdy hiking boots, windproof and waterproof layered clothing, as well as ample water and emergency provisions are absolutely essential.
Parking
Parking is available at the lower stations of the ropeways (such as Asahidake Onsen or Sounkyo Onsen), but can fill up very quickly during the peak autumn foliage season.
Safety
This is brown bear territory, so carrying a bear bell is highly recommended; furthermore, never underestimate the unpredictable mountain weather and always stay on the marked trails.
Time needed
Short walks near the ropeway stations take about one to two hours, whereas extensive summit climbs or multi-day trekking tours across the wilderness will occupy several full days.
