Odienné is the capital of the Kabadougou Region in northwestern Ivory Coast, located near the triple border with Guinea and Mali. The city sits at the foot of the Denguélé Massif, whose prominent mountains dominate the local landscape. In the 19th century, Odienné served as the capital of the empire of Samory Touré, a significant resistance leader against French colonial forces. This historical importance is still reflected today in the identity of the predominantly Muslim Malinké population. The region is a key agricultural hub, primarily producing cotton, cashew nuts, and yams. Furthermore, cattle ranching in the vast savannas surrounding the city plays a central role in the economy. Odienné is equipped with a significant regional airport, connecting the city to the capital Yamoussoukro and Abidjan. Despite its proximity to the borders and the associated challenges, the city is regarded as a peaceful center for education and trade within the Denguélé region.
