The topography is predominantly flat to gently undulating, intersected by numerous small rivers flowing into the Gulf of Guinea. Geologically, the area is dominated by young Quaternary sediments and sand deposits shaped by longshore currents. The climate is intensely humid and tropical, which sustains remnants of the primary rainforest. Since the 1970s, San Pedro has transformed from a minor settlement into a modern industrial center, while the coastal plain is also gaining recognition for its tourism potential due to its pristine beaches and secluded coves.
