WWF Oasis Le Cesine (Italy)

Weather…

The WWF Oasis Le Cesine is located on the Adriatic coast of the Salento peninsula in Puglia, representing the last remnant of the vast marshlands that once stretched between Brindisi and Otranto. The reserve covers about 380 hectares and consists of a complex system of dunes, two large coastal ponds, wet meadows, and Mediterranean maquis. Since 1977, it has been recognized as a wetland of international importance under the Ramsar Convention. Le Cesine is a haven for birdwatchers, as it lies on a major migratory route; during winter and migration seasons, ospreys, flamingos, and numerous duck species can be observed here. The flora is rich in rare wild orchids and specialized coastal plants adapted to the saline soil. An ancient fortified farmhouse, the Masseria Le Cesine, now serves as the visitor center and museum. Through the efforts of the WWF, this valuable ecosystem was saved from coastal development and now gives a unique space for scientific research and environmental education.
