Nuraghe Su Nuraxi (Italy)

Weather…

Su Nuraxi near Barumini is the most significant and best-preserved nuragic complex in Sardinia, serving as a paramount monument of the Nuragic civilization. The structure consists of a central tower dating back to the 17th century BC, surrounded by four later corner towers connected by a massive curtain wall. Encircling this fortress is a labyrinthine settlement featuring the foundations of approximately 50 circular huts from a prehistoric village. The construction technique, utilizing massive basalt blocks stacked without mortar, demonstrates the advanced engineering skills of the ancient Sardinians. The complex functioned as a defensive stronghold as well as a ritual and social hub for the local community. It was systematically excavated and studied in the 1950s under the direction of archaeologist Giovanni Lilliu. In 1997, Su Nuraxi was designated a UNESCO World Heritage site for being a unique example of prehistoric monumental architecture in the Mediterranean. Artifacts found at the site, including pottery and bronze figurines, provide deep insights into daily life over 3,000 years ago.
