Colleferro is a modern industrial city located within the Metropolitan City of Rome, officially established on June 13, 1935. The town's development is intrinsically linked to the engineer Leopoldo Parodi Delfino, who founded the BPD explosives factory here in 1912. Due to its strategic industrial role, the city was heavily targeted during World War II, leading to the creation of an extensive network of underground air-raid shelters that remain a historical feature today. In the contemporary era, Colleferro has evolved into a hub for the European aerospace industry, serving as the headquarters for Avio, the manufacturer of the Vega space launch vehicles. The urban layout showcases early 20th-century planned architecture, largely designed by the renowned architect Riccardo Morandi. Cultural assets include the Archaeological Museum of Colleferro, which houses significant paleontological remains of prehistoric elephants found in local lignite deposits.
