Ancient Theatre of Taormina (Italy)

Weather…

The Ancient Theatre of Taormina is the second largest of its kind in Sicily after Syracuse, offering a spectacular view of Mount Etna and the Ionian Sea. Originally constructed by the Greeks in the 3rd century BC, it was extensively rebuilt and expanded by the Romans during the 2nd century AD. While the Greeks utilized the natural hollow of Mount Tauro for the seating, the Romans added brick masonry and a monumental stage wall. The cavea has a diameter of 109 meters and originally accommodated up to 5,000 spectators in antiquity. Originally intended for dramatic performances, the Romans later adapted the arena for gladiatorial contests. Today, the theater is celebrated for its exceptional acoustics and serves as a premier venue for international art and film festivals. It is widely regarded as one of the most beautifully situated ancient structures in the world, where architecture blends seamlessly with the surrounding landscape. Many of the original Corinthian columns at the stage backdrop were re-erected during 19th-century restoration efforts.
