Porto Santo Stefano is the spirited capital of the Monte Argentario peninsula, a former island now tethered to the Tuscan mainland by three narrow strips of land. The town's multi-colored houses cascade down steep cliffs toward two distinct harbors: the traditional Porto Vecchio and the bustling Porto della Valle, the primary link to Giglio Island. Its strategic importance in the 16th century as part of the Spanish State of the Presidi is marked by the formidable Fortezza Spagnola, which looms over the town and houses a maritime museum. Today, Porto Santo Stefano is a high-end nautical hub, where sleek super-yachts dock alongside traditional fishing trawlers. The waterfront promenade, styled by legendary car designer Giorgetto Giugiaro, is lined with some of the region's finest seafood eateries. The town celebrates its maritime heritage every August 15th with the Palio Marinaro, a historic rowing race between its four districts. For the best views, travelers take the Strada Panoramica, a scenic cliffside drive overlooking the Tuscan Archipelago.
