San Gimignano (Italy)

Weather…

San Gimignano is a small hill town in Tuscany, renowned for its medieval architecture and the remaining 14 stone towers that create a unique skyline, earning it the nickname 'the Manhattan of the Middle Ages.' During the town's height in the 12th and 13th centuries, as many as 72 tower-houses were built by wealthy rival families as symbols of their power and wealth. Its strategic location on the Via Francigena, the main pilgrimage route to Rome, fostered significant economic growth through the trade of agricultural products and saffron. In 1990, the historic center was designated a UNESCO World Heritage site for being an outstanding example of a medieval urban settlement. The town's Collegiate Church contains remarkable 14th-century frescoes depicting biblical scenes, created by masters of the Sienese school. San Gimignano is also famous for its Vernaccia di San Gimignano, a white wine produced in the area since at least the 13th century. The town's decline began after the Black Death in 1348, leading to its submission to Florence, which inadvertently helped preserve its medieval character by halting further modernization.
