Monterosso al Mare is the westernmost and most accessible village of the Cinque Terre. Unlike its four neighbors, Monterosso has a long, sandy beach in the Fegina district. The town is split into two parts by a tunnel: the modern Fegina and the welcoming historic old town with its typical 'carruggi' (narrow alleys). At the end of the beach stands 'Il Gigante', an impressive 14-meter-tall concrete statue of Neptune built into the rock. Monterosso is famous for its lemons, celebrated with a dedicated festival every May, and for its premium salted anchovies. The Capuchin monastery on the hill provides a wide-open panoramic view of the entire coastline. Despite its popularity, Monterosso remains an animated Ligurian seaside village at heart. From 2024, the Sentiero Azzurro linking the Cinque Terre villages costs 7.50 euros per day, rising to 15 euros in peak season. Monterosso, the largest village, remains the most popular trailhead.
The most pleasant time to visit is Jun, Jul, Sep.
