Camogli, whose name likely derives from 'Casa delle Mogli' (House of the Wives), maintains a rugged charm away from mass tourism. Its architecture is unique: the narrow harbor-front houses reach up to seven stories and are painted in bustling colors, which originally helped fishermen identify their homes from the sea. The historic center clings tightly to the coastline, crowned by the Basilica of Santa Maria Assunta, spectacularly built on a small rocky outcrop known as the 'Isola'. Right next to it, the Castello della Dragonara fortress watches over the small harbor. A highlight is the annual Sagra del Pesce in May, where tons of fish are fried in a giant pan nearly four meters in diameter right on the waterfront. Camogli is also the well-suited starting point for hikes through the Portofino Regional Park to the secluded San Fruttuoso Abbey.
