Riomaggiore is the first village encountered when traveling north from La Spezia into the Cinque Terre. The town stretches along the valley of the Rivus Major stream, which today flows beneath the main street. The architecture is characterized by typical Genoese 'tower houses,' standing three to five stories tall and painted in animated pastel shades. Life centers around the small harbor framed by two steep cliffs, where fishing boats are pulled directly onto the street during storms. Riomaggiore is the starting point of the famous 'Via dell'Amore' (Path of Love), a pedestrian walkway carved into the cliffside connecting the village to neighboring Manarola. Culturally significant sites include the Church of San Giovanni Battista, built in 1340, and the medieval castle ruins on Cerricò hill. The village is also well known for its excellent seafood snacks, often sold in paper cones (cuoppo) to go. The Sentiero Azzurro toward Manarola costs 7.50-15 euros per day since 2024, and the Via dell'Amore reopened partially in 2024 after lengthy restoration. Tickets are best booked online via the Cinque Terre Card.
