Sorek Desalination Plant (Israel)

Weather…

The Sorek Desalination Plant, located south of Tel Aviv near Palmahim, is one of the world's largest and most advanced seawater reverse osmosis (SWRO) facilities. Since becoming operational in 2013, it has been producing high-quality drinking water from the Mediterranean Sea. With an annual capacity of approximately 150 million cubic meters, Sorek provides a significant portion of Israel's domestic water supply. The plant set new industry benchmarks during its construction by utilizing vertical pressure vessels and large 16-inch membranes, which increased operational efficiency and minimized the facility's physical footprint. Sorek is a cornerstone of Israel's national strategy to ensure water security in a semi-arid climate and reduce reliance on natural sources like the Sea of Galilee. Innovative energy recovery systems integrated into the plant have significantly lowered the energy consumption per cubic meter of desalinated water. Developed through a Public-Private Partnership (PPP) model, the plant showcases Israeli engineering expertise and leadership in global water technology.
