Muckross House
Muckross House is a grand Tudor-style mansion located in the heart of Killarney National Park in County Kerry. Completed in 1843 for Henry Arthur Herbert and his wife, the water-colourist Mary Balfour Herbert, it was designed by the celebrated Scottish architect William Burn. The house is most famous for hosting Queen Victoria in 1861, a visit that required extensive renovations and nearly bankrupted the Herbert family due to the lavish expenses incurred. Situated on the shores of Muckross Lake and Lough Leane, the estate features world-class gardens, including a notable rock garden and vast collections of rhododendrons. The interior serves as a perfectly preserved time capsule of Victorian life, showcasing the stark contrast between the opulent living quarters of the gentry and the functional 'below stairs' areas of the staff. In 1932, the estate was presented to the Irish nation, becoming the cornerstone of the country's first national park and a major heritage site.
