Mangerton Mountain (Ireland)

Weather…

Mangerton Mountain, rising to 838 m in County Kerry, Ireland, is a prominent peak within Killarney National Park. Its geology is characterized by Old Red Sandstone, shaped by Pleistocene glaciations. The mountain features a distinct corrie lake, the Devil's Punchbowl, which is approximately 30 m deep. The surrounding habitat comprises blanket bog and heath, supporting rare flora such as the Irish clubmoss and fauna including the peregrine falcon. Archaeological evidence indicates human activity since the Bronze Age, including megalithic tombs and early medieval farming enclosures. The mountain's name is derived from the Irish 'Mangartún', possibly meaning 'place of the mongrel'. In recent decades, Mangerton has become a key site for eco-tourism, with annual visitor numbers exceeding 50,000.

📋 Practical info

🧭
Getting there
The starting point for this well-known hiking trail is typically reached via a winding minor road that branches off the N71 shortly after Killarney. The scenic starting point is very well known among many local walkers.
📅
Best season
From mid-spring to early autumn, by far the best time window opens up for extended hikes. The large, open summit plateau can be incredibly boggy and very unpleasant to navigate during the cold, wet winter months.
⛰️
Terrain & paths
The strenuous main route follows a relatively clear, rocky mountain path which, right at the summit, becomes a wide, visually featureless and potentially highly confusing bog plateau when engulfed in fog.
🎒
What to bring
Good, absolutely waterproof mountain boots are of crucial importance to safely tackle the many waterlogged sections. Bring extra warm clothing, as the high plateau is completely and unforgivingly exposed to the raw elements.
🅿️
Parking
There is an unpaved but designated parking area near the start of the scenic trail. It is highly advisable to arrive early on weekends, as the broad mountain is an extremely popular, safer alternative to higher peaks.
⚠️
Safety
The vast, flat summit plateau is absolutely notorious for causing severe navigation errors in sudden, thick rolling fog. Always carry a physical compass and know the exact bearing leading back to the safe descent path.
⏱️
Time needed
A complete round trip over the rocky paths to the summit typically takes between four and five hours at a moderate, continuous pace, which comfortably includes enough time allocated for relaxing scenic breaks.
