Ross Castle (Ireland)

Weather…

Ross Castle is a beautifully restored 15th-century tower house located on the edge of Lough Leane within Killarney National Park, County Kerry. Built by the O'Donoghue Mór clan, it serves as a quintessential example of a Gaelic chieftain's stronghold, featuring a central keep protected by a fortified bawn (enclosure) with circular flanking towers. The castle's history is steeped in local lore, most famously a prophecy claiming the fortress would never fall until a warship sailed upon the lake. This became reality in 1652 during the Cromwellian conquest when General Ludlow transported artillery boats up the River Laune to the Lough, causing the superstitious defenders to surrender immediately. Following extensive restoration in the late 20th century, the castle's interior was refitted with period-appropriate 16th and 17th-century oak furniture. It remains one of the most visited historical sites in southwest Ireland, offering guided tours that detail medieval daily life and provide panoramic views of the surrounding mountains and lakes.
