Sawa Lake (Iraq)

Weather…

Sawa Lake was a unique endorheic basin located in southern Iraq, in the territory of the al-Muthanna province, at a distance of approximately 23 kilometers west of the urban center of Samawah. In clear contrast to the rest of the country lake network, it did not benefit from hydrological inputs or outflows at the surface level, but was supported exclusively by groundwater infiltrations from deep aquifers. The reservoir was recognized for its extreme concentration of mineral substances and salts, values that almost doubled the level measured in the Persian Gulf. The aquatic perimeter was bordered by natural limestone walls that served to isolate the basin. Due to the overexploitation of groundwater sources, unauthorized drilling, and prolonged episodes of severe drought, Sawa Lake evaporated completely during 2022.

📋 Practical info

🧭
Getting there
The lake basin is reached by driving from the city of Samawa, typically using local paved roads that transition to desert tracks near the site. Standard vehicles can usually make the journey, but high clearance is beneficial near the rocky shores.
📅
Best season
The cooler months from November to March are the most suitable for visiting, as the extreme summer heat in the Iraqi desert can be unbearable. Spring occasionally brings mild weather, making exploration of the limestone formations much more pleasant.
⛰️
Terrain & paths
The landscape features a stark desert environment surrounding a crusty, highly saline basin, flanked by jagged limestone formations. The ground is rocky, uneven, and covered in mineral deposits, making movement challenging in certain areas.
🎒
What to bring
Sturdy, closed-toe footwear is absolutely essential for walking on sharp limestone rocks and salty crusts. Visitors must bring significant amounts of drinking water, heavy sun protection, and a hat, as there is virtually no natural shade available.
🅿️
Parking
Parking is informal and takes place on the flat desert plains just outside the immediate limestone ridges of the basin. It is crucial to ensure vehicles are parked on solid, dry ground to prevent them from getting stuck in softer mineral deposits.
⚠️
Safety
The intense sun and extreme temperatures pose a severe risk of dehydration; carrying extra water is mandatory. The limestone edges around the basin can be sharp and brittle, so extreme caution is required when walking near steep drop-offs.
⏱️
Time needed
Most visitors spend between two to four hours exploring the surreal formations, taking photographs, and observing the unique landscape. Extended stays are rare due to the harsh environmental conditions and lack of tourist infrastructure.
