Great Mosque of Kufa (Iraq)

Weather…

The Great Mosque of Kufa is one of the earliest and most significant places of worship in the Islamic world. The original structure was founded in 638 by Saad ibn Abi Waqqas and was substantially expanded during the mid-7th century. The central courtyard of the 11,000-square-meter complex is surrounded by nine-meter-high brick walls with crenellations, fortified by 28 semicircular bastions. It was within the walls of this mosque that Caliph Ali ibn Abi Talib was assassinated in 661 while praying. The interior space houses several historical shrines and tombs. The main gate, decorated with a golden dome and blue tiles, is the result of mid-20th-century renovations. The mosque accommodates tens of thousands of pilgrims annually, serving as a focal point for religious gatherings in the Najaf Governorate.
