Euphrates (Iraq)

Weather…

The Euphrates is the longest river in Western Asia, with a total length measuring around 2,800 kilometers. Its sources are located in the Armenian Highlands of eastern Turkey, from where it flows through Syria before entering the western and southern sections of Iraq. Unlike the Tigris, the Euphrates has fewer tributaries within Iraqi territory, relying heavily on precipitation from its upper course. The river system drains an area of nearly 500,000 square kilometers. In antiquity, the banks of the Euphrates hosted the centers of the Sumerian and Babylonian empires. At the confluence of Al-Qurna, the river joins the Tigris to form the Shatt al-Arab. Today, the river flow is controlled by numerous dams.
