Namak Lake, whose name means salt lake in Persian, is a massive, largely dried-up salt pan in the Dasht-e Kavir desert of central Iran. Covering an area of approximately 1800 square kilometers, the formation is a fascinating geological remnant of a prehistoric inland sea that covered a significant part of the central plateau during the last Ice Age. The lake basin lies about 60 kilometers east of the pilgrimage city of Qom, at an elevation of less than 800 meters above sea level. The extremely dry desert climate with high temperatures and intense solar radiation ensures that the sparse water supply arriving from the Qom River evaporates quickly. As a result, a massive, blindingly white salt crust is left behind, which fractures into distinct geometric polygonal patterns.
