Kavir National Park, located in central Iran, is an extensive protected area covering approximately 4000 square kilometers of surface. It lies on the western edge of the large Dasht-e Kavir desert and falls under the administrative jurisdictions of Semnan, Tehran, Qom, and Isfahan provinces. The landscape is primarily defined by dry steppes, rocky mountain ridges, and vast clay salt flats. Despite the extremely harsh and water-scarce conditions, the park possesses a surprisingly diverse fauna. It is of paramount importance as one of the last known refuges for the critically endangered Asiatic cheetah and the Persian onager. The territory is also inhabited by striped hyenas, gray wolves, and various gazelle species. The Namak salt lake, situated at the park boundary, contributes significantly to the unique ecological balance.

Kavir National Park is typically accessed via unpaved roads leading from the surrounding desert towns. It is highly recommended to join an experienced local guide to safely navigate and find the more remote areas.

The best time to visit this fascinating desert region is usually during the milder spring or autumn months. The extremely hot summer period should absolutely be avoided due to the intensely harsh solar radiation.

The landscape consists largely of arid plains, sandy stretches, and rocky hills. Visitors must be fully prepared for uneven, dry paths that are often not clearly marked and can be quite challenging to follow.

What to bring

It is absolutely essential to bring abundant drinking water, proper sun protection, and lightweight, long-sleeved clothing. A pair of binoculars is especially worthwhile for safely observing the unique desert wildlife from afar.

Parking facilities are normally found at the official entrance areas or in the nearest settlements situated on the edge of the park. Never leave your vehicle unattended or stuck in areas with deep, loose sand.

Due to the extreme isolation and harsh conditions, it is critical to discuss your planned route with locals beforehand. Watch out for wild animals and always stay close to your group because of the high risk of disorientation.
