The Khar Turan National Park, often simply referred to as Turan, is the second largest contiguous protected natural area in Iran and an officially recognized biosphere reserve by UNESCO. Covering an extent of over 14,000 square kilometers, the park is located in the southeastern part of Semnan province. The landscape is dominated by a harsh desert and semi-desert environment, extensive salt pans, sand dunes, and barren mountain ranges. This isolated and difficult-to-access region has become a crucial refuge for critically endangered animal species. It is home to the largest remaining population of the Asiatic cheetah, of which only a few dozen individuals are left worldwide. Furthermore, significant herds of Persian onagers, goitered gazelles, and golden eagles can be found in the territory.
