Khar Turan National Park (Iran)

Weather…

The Khar Turan National Park, often simply referred to as Turan, is the second largest contiguous protected natural area in Iran and an officially recognized biosphere reserve by UNESCO. Covering an extent of over 14,000 square kilometers, the park is located in the southeastern part of Semnan province. The landscape is dominated by a harsh desert and semi-desert environment, extensive salt pans, sand dunes, and barren mountain ranges. This isolated and difficult-to-access region has become a crucial refuge for critically endangered animal species. It is home to the largest remaining population of the Asiatic cheetah, of which only a few dozen individuals are left worldwide. Furthermore, significant herds of Persian onagers, goitered gazelles, and golden eagles can be found in the territory.

📋 Practical info

🧭
Getting there
Access to this vast desert biosphere reserve is usually arranged through local tour operators or guides starting from Shahrud or Tehran, as independent navigation in this immense arid region is highly challenging.
📅
Best season
The most favorable time to explore the park and observe wildlife like the Persian onager is during the cooler months from late autumn to early spring, avoiding the extreme and potentially dangerous summer heat.
⛰️
Terrain & paths
The landscape is characterized by vast plains, arid steppes, and rocky desert expanses with very few established trails, requiring robust four-wheel-drive vehicles for any meaningful exploration of the interior.
🎒
What to bring
Visitors must bring abundant supplies of drinking water, comprehensive sun protection including wide-brimmed hats and high-SPF sunscreen, sturdy desert footwear, and binoculars for spotting distant wildlife species.
🅿️
Parking
Dedicated parking facilities are practically nonexistent within the reserve itself; vehicles are typically left at designated ranger stations or base camps on the periphery under the supervision of local guides.
⚠️
Safety
Traveling without an experienced local guide is strongly discouraged due to the extreme isolation, lack of mobile network coverage, and the constant risk of dehydration or getting lost in the featureless desert terrain.
⏱️
Time needed
A comprehensive visit usually requires a multi-day expedition of at least two to four days to fully appreciate the vast scale of the reserve and maximize the chances of encountering the elusive desert wildlife.
