The Suramadu Bridge, officially the Surabaya-Madura Bridge, is a cable-stayed structure that connects the city of Surabaya on the island of Java with the town of Bangkalan on the island of Madura. Spanning a total distance of 5,438 meters, it currently holds the record as the longest bridge in Indonesia and was the first to cross the Madura Strait. The project was initiated in August 2003 and saw its official completion and opening in June 2009. Architecturally, the bridge is divided into three sections: the causeway, the approach bridge, and the main cable-stayed bridge which has a span of 434 meters. This infrastructure has played a critical role in reducing travel time between Java and Madura from a 30-minute ferry ride to just a few minutes by car. It was designed to accelerate economic integration and development in the Madura region by providing better access to the markets and services of East Java.

Visiting
The bridge can be crossed on foot or by vehicle at any time - a pedestrian walkway is provided. Visitors can enjoy views of the surrounding coastline and maritime traffic.
Typical hours
The bridge is open 24/7 as it is a public road link. There is no entrance fee, but expect traffic congestion during peak hours.
Photography
Photography is allowed from the viewpoints at both ends of the bridge and from the pedestrian walkway. Drone shots may require a permit - check locally.
Time needed
Crossing the bridge on foot takes about 30 to 40 minutes. If you just stop for photos, allow around 15 minutes.
Combine with
Combine crossing the bridge with a visit to Surabaya on one side and Madura Island on the other. The Kenjeran beaches and Surabaya Aquarium are also nearby.
Getting there
The bridge is easily reached by highway from Surabaya, with several access ramps. Public buses between Surabaya and Madura cross the bridge, but with limited stops.
Insider tip
Visit the bridge in the late afternoon to see the sunset over the strait. Bring binoculars to watch the ships passing underneath.
