The Bromo Tengger Semeru National Park is home to one of the most photographed landscapes in the world. At the center of a massive 10-kilometer-wide ancient caldera lie several volcanic peaks, most notably the smoking Mount Bromo. The entire area is surrounded by the 'Sea of Sand', a vast desert of fine volcanic ash that gives the region a surreal, lunar appearance that is unlike anywhere else on Earth. The essential experience involves a pre-dawn jeep ride to the rim of the caldera at Mount Penanjakan. As the sun rises, it illuminates Mount Bromo and Mount Batok, with the towering Mount Semeru, Java's highest peak, erupting puffs of smoke in the far distance. Afterward, visitors cross the Sea of Sand on foot or horseback and climb a steep staircase to stand on the very edge of Bromo’s active, steaming crater. Travelers typically reach the park via Probolinggo or Malang. Warm clothing is absolutely necessary as temperatures can drop significantly at night and in the early morning. The dry season from May to September is the convenient time to visit for clear skies. The area is also culturally significant for the Tengger people, who hold the annual Yadnya Kasada festival, offering food and flowers to the volcano by throwing them into the crater. For a local taste, try 'Bakso' or 'Mie Ayam' from the small warungs in Cemoro Lawang. These hot noodle dishes are the well-suited way to warm up after a cold morning spent exploring the volcanic highlands.
