Skálholt (Iceland)

Weather…

For over 700 years, Skálholt stood as one of Iceland's paramount intellectual and cultural epicenters. In 1056, Gissur Ísleifsson established the country's first bishopric here, making the site the religious nucleus of southern Iceland. In addition to its cathedral, Skálholt hosted Iceland's first school, where generations of scholars were educated. During the Middle Ages, it was a thriving community of up to 200 residents, a population size that was extraordinary for Iceland at the time. The 16th-century Reformation brought dramatic upheavals, marking the end of the Catholic era with the execution of the last Catholic bishop, Jón Arason. Following devastating earthquakes in the late 18th century, the episcopal seat was eventually relocated to Reykjavík. The contemporary cathedral, consecrated in 1963, stands as a monument to this long history and remains a significant venue for sacred music and cultural events.
