Skálholt Cathedral (Iceland)

Weather…

Skálholt was for over eight centuries one of the most important cultural and religious centers in Iceland. Starting in 1056, it served as the seat of the first Bishop of Iceland and developed into a major center of learning and education. The current cathedral, built between 1956 and 1963, is the tenth church to stand on this historic site. It was constructed to commemorate the 900th anniversary of the bishopric and houses valuable artworks, including modern stained glass windows by Gerður Helgadóttir. Archaeological excavations have revealed a medieval tunnel beneath the church that once connected the bishop’s residence to the cathedral. Skálholt is also infamous as the site where the last Catholic bishop, Jón Arason, was executed in 1550, marking the formal end of Catholicism in Iceland. Today, the site remains a peaceful place of pilgrimage and a venue for prestigious summer concerts.
