Latrabjarg Bird Cliffs
Latrabjarg marks the westernmost point of mainland Iceland and is home to one of the most massive bird cliffs in the world. The cliffs stretch for an impressive 14 kilometers along the coast and reach a maximum height of 441 meters above sea level at their highest point. This area is of global ecological importance, providing a safe haven for millions of individual seabirds during the summer months. Latrabjarg is particularly famous for its remarkably tame Atlantic puffins, which can often be observed and photographed from just a few feet away. Geographically, the headland marks the westernmost point of Europe, excluding the Azores archipelago. Historically, the cliffs were a vital food source for local farmers, who would descend the sheer walls on ropes to collect eggs and hunt birds. Today, the entire site is strictly protected as a national natural monument and serves as a premier destination for ornithologists and nature enthusiasts worldwide.
