Hellissandur is a historic fishing village situated at the tip of the Snæfellsnes Peninsula in western Iceland. Recognized as one of the country's oldest fishing settlements, it was already a major hub for North Atlantic fishing by the 16th century. The village is positioned on the edge of the Snæfellsjökull National Park, with the towering glacier providing a dramatic backdrop. A significant engineering feature nearby is the Gufuskálar longwave radio mast, which at 412 meters tall was once the highest structure in Western Europe. The local maritime museum provides a window into the grueling lives of early fishermen and displays 'Bliki', one of Iceland's oldest surviving rowboats. In recent years, Hellissandur has emerged as a center for street art, featuring numerous murals that celebrate local history and the natural environment. The area is also excellent for birdwatching within the surrounding lava fields and along the coastline.
