Dynjandi (Iceland)

Weather…

Dynjandi, also known as Fjallfoss, is the most spectacular waterfall in the Westfjords of Iceland and a true icon of the region's rugged natural beauty. It is actually a series of seven waterfalls, with the uppermost and largest being the most famous for its distinctive trapezoidal shape that widens from 30 meters at the top to 60 meters at the bottom. This unique formation gives it the appearance of a massive bridal veil cascading down a staircase of basalt rock. The total height of the falls is 100 meters, eventually flowing into the Arnarfjörður fjord below. Since 1981, Dynjandi has been designated as a national natural monument to preserve its pristine surroundings. A well-maintained hiking trail allows visitors to walk alongside the six smaller waterfalls below, such as Göngufoss and Bæjarfoss, before reaching the grand main falls. Its remote location in the Westfjords ensures a more tranquil experience compared to the popular sites in southern Iceland.

Photography
Photography is unrestricted; the seven-tiered cascade has great perspectives from different heights. A polarizing filter helps reduce spray and enhance the water's colors.

Time needed
The walk from the lower parking lot to the top takes about 30-40 minutes. Allow 1 to 1.5 hours in total to enjoy the views and take photos.
Combine with
Combine Dynjandi with nearby Westfjord attractions like the Látrabjarg cliffs or Rauðisandur beach. The town of Ísafjörður is also worth a day trip and gives accommodation options.
🧭
Getting there
Dynjandi is located on Road 60, about 30 kilometers south of Ísafjörður. A rental car is necessary as there is no public transport into the Westfjords; the road is partly unpaved.
💡
Insider tip
Visit Dynjandi in the late morning when sunlight best illuminates the cascades. Bring a rain jacket, as the spray can be very strong, especially at the lower section.
